Park Volunteers Day - Saturday, April 5, throughout Georgia.  This is the annual event for volunteers to help maintain and preserve parks and other Civil War era historic sites & attractions across Georgia.  Past volunteer activities have included painting signs and fences, reinstalling headstones, and laying trails.  Contact these Georgia sites (listed in alphabetical order) or others if you want to help:

Fort Gaines Birthday Party and Antique Show - Saturday, April 5, Fort Gaines.  Come help celebrate the 192nd birthday of Fort Gaines.  This frontier fort later protected southwest Georgians during the Civil War.  This event will feature various antique vendors, food vendors and music.  Free admission.  Directions: I-75 to Exit #62, west on U.S. Hwy. 82 to Cuthbert, then south on GA Hwy. 266 to Fort Gaines.  229-768-2366.
Homeschool Day - Monday, April 7, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History, 2829 Cherokee Street, Kennesaw.  Children of all ages who are homeschooled can explore the Museum’s exhibits for a special rate.  Educational programs will be offered hourly giving everyone the chance to learn more about history.  Reservations not required.  Admission.  Directions: I-75 to Exit #273, turn west on Wade Green Road (which becomes Cherokee Street).  The museum is on the right hand side; parking is directly across the street on the left.  770-427-2117, www.southernmuseum.org.
“High Cotton and Tall Columns” - Tuesday through Thursday, April 11 through 13, University of Georgia , Athens .  The Southern Garden History Society’s annual meeting explores the influence of cotton on the architecture, gardens and landscapes of middle Georgia .  Local tours include antebellum Greek Revival homes and the State Botanical Garden of Georgia.  Nearby tours include Madison , which largely escaped the ravages of the Civil War, and Milledgeville, the Civil War era capital of Georgia .  Included in the Milledgeville tour is the Old Governor’s Mansion, which has recently undergone extensive renovation.  336-499-7965, ajlewis@uga.edu.
Kennesaw Mountain Trails Workday - Saturday, April 12, 8:30 am to 1:00 pm, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.  The Kennesaw Mountain Trail Club helps maintain the trails at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.  There are no membership requirements other than a willingness to work.  Trail building experience not necessary.  Meet at the park maintenance area behind the Visitor Center.  The Park provides all necessary tools and safety equipment.  770-427-4686, www.nps.gov/kemo/index.htm.
Bus Tour to Port Columbus Naval Museum & Andersonville - Saturday, April 12, 8:30 am to 7:00 pm.  Sponsored by the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History and the Center for The Study of the Civil War Era at Kennesaw State University.  Explore the role two areas of south Georgia played in the Civil War.  The day includes a guided tour of the Port Columbus National Civil War Naval Museum, Andersonville National Historic Site and the National Prisoner of War Museum.  Drs. 7th Annual National Confederate Memorial Service - Saturday, April 12, 10:00 am, in front of the carving at Stone Mountain Park, Stone Mountain.  Service to honor Confederate President Jefferson Davis during the 200th year following his birth.  There will be speakers, an honor guard, cannon and rifle salutes.  Directions: I-285 to Exit #39, east on Stone Mountain Freeway to the park.  770-979-2637, DLFreb@msn.com.
Story of Wool - Saturday, April 12, 10:30 am to 3:30 pm, Jarrell Plantation State Historic Site, near Juliette.  See demonstration of the process of producing wool cloth from shearing the sheep, to dyeing, carding, spinning the yarn, and weaving the cloth, from “sheep to shawl.”  Includes hands-on activities.  Jarrell Plantation was visited by part of Sherman’s army during its “March to the Sea.”  Admission: $2.50 to $4.00.  Directions: Southbound I-75 to Exit #185, east on GA Hwy. 18, look for signs.  Northbound I-75 to Exit #171, north on U.S. Hwy. 23, then east on GA Hwy. 18, look for signs.  478-986-5172, http://gastateparks.org/info/jarrell.
146th Anniversary of the Siege of Fort Pulaski - Saturday & Sunday, April 12 & 13, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Fort Pulaski National Monument, Savannah.  Special two-day event to commemorate the 146th anniversary of the siege and reduction of Fort Pulaski.  The historic battle was fought April 10-11, 1862, and included the use of hard-hitting rifled cannons.  Within 30 hours Union forces on nearby Tybee Island breeched the 7-foot-thick walls of Fort Pulaski, demonstrating the power of new, long-range weaponry and signaling the end of masonry fortifications.  Admission: Adults $3.00.  Directions: From I-95, take exit for I-16 about 15 miles west of Savannah.  From I-16, take U.S. Highway 80 East.  Follow signs for Fort Pulaski, Tybee Island and beaches.  Fort Pulaski National Monument entrance is approximately 15 miles east of downtown Savannah.  912-786-5787, www.nps.gov/fopu/index.htm.
Simply Southern Jubilee - Friday through Sunday, April 18 through 20, Nash Farm Battlefield Park, 4361 Jonesboro Road, Hampton.  Celebrate Southern heritage with bluegrass music, a barbeque contest and the roar of cannon.  The cooking and fiddles start at 3:00 pm on Friday, then continue from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday & Sunday with food, shopping, music, living history demonstrations and a battle reenactment.  Admission: Adults $5.00, Children ages 5-12 $3.00.  Directions: I-75 to Exit #221 (Jonesboro Road), then west about 6 miles.  Entrance is on the left.  770-288-7300, agilbert@co.henry.ga.us.
Living History Day - Saturday, April 19, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Old Governor’s Mansion, 120 South Clarke Street, Milledgeville.  Held in conjunction with the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Old Capitol Museum, the Old Governor’s Mansion will host uniformed re-enactors, with docents in period costume interpreting the house as it was during the War.   Following the tours, a concert will be performed by the Eighth Regimental Band from Rome, Georgia.  Admission for house tour.  478-445-4545, www2.gcsu.edu/mansion.

144th Kingston Confederate Memorial Day Service - Sunday, April 27, 2:30 pm, Kingston Methodist Church, 13 East Main Street, Kingston.  Kingston has honored their 250 unknown soldiers since April 23, 1865.  The Kingston Woman's History Club began and carries on the tradition, now honoring all war veterans.  Military salute by the American Legion with grave decoration at Confederate Cemetery by area Boys Scouts and local children.  Special music and guest speaker.  Reception and open house to follow event at Kingston Museum.  Free admission.  Directions: I-75 to Exit #293, southwest on U.S. Hwy. 411 to Kingston.  770-336-5269, www.notatlanta.org.
Junior Ranger Day Kids Art Contest - Entries due by Monday, April 28, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park .  Children ages five to seventeen are encouraged to illustrate the 1864 Battle of Kennesaw Mountain through art.  Be creative and show what you think this important battle must have looked like.  Pen, ink, acrylic, watercolor, oil, crayon, marker, and pencil mediums are all accepted.  Canvases must be no larger than 24” x 24”.  There will be four categories: Plebes (ages 5 – 7), Yearlings (8 – 10), Cadets (11-13), and Firsties (14 and up).  All submissions are due by 4:30 pm on Monday, April 27th.  Submissions may be mailed in or delivered in person to the Battlefield’s Visitor Center .  Winners will be announced at 12:30 p.m. on May 3rd.  Entrants are highly encouraged to be present at the announcing of winners.  Those interested in entering the contest must complete an entry form.  Visit www.nps.gov/kemo for contest rules and entry form.  Directions: I-75 to Exit #269, west on Barrett Parkway for approximately 3 miles, then left onto Old Highway 41.  Turn right at the next traffic light, Stilesboro Road , and the visitors center is on the left.  770-427-4686, www.nps.gov/kemo/.
Wilson 150: The Exhibition - December 7 through May 23, President Woodrow Wilson’s Boyhood Home, 419 Seventh Street, Augusta.  A traveling exhibit examining the legacy of the 28th U.S. President, the first with Southern roots following the Civil War.  It contains artifacts relating to President Woodrow Wilson, including his top hat and gloves, tennis racquet and golf balls.  The home is where young Woodrow Wilson and his family lived during the Civil War.  Admission fee.  Directions: I-20 to Exit #199 or #200, then south to 7th Street in downtown Augusta, located on the corner of 7th & Telfair Streets.  706-724-0436, http://historicaugusta.org/.
Liberty on the Border: A Civil War Journey In Time Exhibit - January 26 through September 7, Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History, 2829 Cherokee Street, Kennesaw.  Explore the physical, cultural, ideological borders that contributed to the Civil War through computer programs and interactive artifact reproductions.  By looking at the way borders were drawn and perceived before, during, and after the War, visitors develop a deeper comprehension of the different and sometimes contentious meanings of personal “liberty.” Admission fee.  Directions: I-75 to Exit #273, turn west on Wade Green Road (which becomes Cherokee Street).  The museum is on the right hand side; parking is directly across the street on the left.  770-427-2117, http://southernmuseum.org/.
