Romantic Memories of Yesterday - Mondays through Saturdays, August 1 through 31, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Stately Oaks Plantation, 100 Carriage Lane, Jonesboro.  Learn the customs, superstitions and rituals of the 1800s at this antebellum plantation home.  House is draped in black reflecting a family in mourning.  Admission: Adults $12.00, Seniors $9.00, Children $6.00.  Directions: I-75, Exit 233, south 4 miles to Jonesboro.  770-473-0197, www.historicaljonesboro.org.

“Ruins to Rapids” Full Moon Hike - Wednesday, August 5, 8:00 to 10:00 pm, Sweetwater State Park, 1750 Mount Vernon Road, Lithia Springs.  This 1-1/2 mile guided hike is moderately difficult.  It visits the Civil War era textile mill ruins of New Manchester and follows the lovely rapids (up to class IV) of Sweetwater Creek.  The hike will continue if overcast but will be cancelled if raining.  Bring a flashlight and sturdy shoes.  Admission: $1.00 to $2.00 per person, plus $3.00 parking.  Directions: Take I-20 west of Atlanta to Exit #44 (Thornton Road), turn south and go 1/4 mile.  Turn right on Blairs Bridge Road, go 2 miles and turn left on Mount Vernon Road.  770-732-5871, http://gastateparks.org/info/sweetwater/.

Kennesaw Mountain Trails Workday - Saturday, August 8, 8:30 am to 1:00 pm, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.  The Kennesaw Mountain Trail Club helps maintain the trails at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.  There are no membership requirements other than a willingness to work.  Trail building experience not necessary.  Meet at the park maintenance area behind the Visitor Center.  The Park provides all necessary tools and safety equipment.  770-427-4686, www.nps.gov/kemo/index.htm.

Guided Battlefield Tour - Saturday, August 15, 10:00 am, Pickett’s Mill Battlefield State Historic Site, 4432 Mount Tabor Church Road, near Dallas.  Ranger led tour of one of the best preserved Civil War battlefields in the nation.  Admission: $2.75 to $4.00.  Directions: Five miles northeast of Dallas off GA Hwy. 381 on Mount Tabor Church Road, accessed by Dallas-Acworth Road or Due West Road, or follow the Georgia Civil War Heritage Trails® roadway “trailblazer” signs from the New Hope community.  From I-20 take Exit #44 (Thornton Road).  770-443-7850, http://gastateparks.org/info/picketts/.

Back to School, 19th Century Style - Saturday, August 15, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, The Cannonball House, 856 Mulberry Street, downtown Macon.  The “school master” and his “students” will demonstrate what school was like for children during and near the Civil War years.  The lunch pail will be filled with delicacies to eat!  Admission: Adults $6.00, Seniors & Military $5.00, Children (age 6+) $2.00.  478-745-5982, www.cannonballhouse.org/.

Fort Jackson Auction - Saturday, August 29, Old Fort Jackson, east of downtown Savannah.  Join us for this annual fundraiser at 201-year-old Old Fort Jackson, a National Historic Landmark, featuring boiled shrimp and slow-cooked barbeque, thousands of donated items, music, kids’ activities and more.  Fort Jackson was a headquarters for Confederate military forces in the Savannah area.  Ticket required.  Directions: East from downtown Savannah via Bay Street and President Street to Woodcock Road.  Turn left and follow signs to Fort Jackson.  912-232-3945, www.chsgeorgia.org.
